Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus region (Specification of borders) and the Black Sea to the southeast. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population (although the country covers both Europe and Asia), while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population. Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were largely focused upon Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in Western European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War, Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the west and the Warsaw Pact in the east. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. "The location and the natural conditions of Europe has enabled it to be the most advanced continent in the world." How ? Explain it with sufficient examples. Europe is the continent with the most moderate climate: due to the Gulfstream there are no big fluctuations between summer and winter. Compare for instance the climate of London and Paris with that at cities at the same latitude in America and China. London and Paris hardly ever have snow and this has been true for at least three quarters of the last 20 centuries. Location is second. Europe is isolated from the rest of the Eurasian continent. When human beings came out of Africa, where they originated, access to Europe was difficult: the Bosporus is open, most of the time, the Caucasus blocks the other road of entry. So few human beings arrived and they could develop easily because population pressure was low and stayed low. I would post this in Answers International. Answered by Runner_incarnate - Sun May 23 19:35:22 2010 How does universal healthcare in Europe work?
Q. My professor today mentioned that most European countries have universal healthcare. This means that everyones healthcare is provided by the state, correct? How much more money do people pay in taxes in Europe than in the U.S.? It would have to be more since their healthcare is covered, right? Like most people I thought that there was a huge tax burden in Britain, but after coming here I now think that's not the case.We pay two forms of tax from our wages:Income tax and National insurance. Your income tax is tax like everywhere else, national insurance pays for your pension and healthcare. I have lived in England all my life up till now and I will fiercely defend our healthcare system, the NHS (national health service). In thanks largely to the effort of our heroic doctors and nurses (and all other staff) the NHS survives...the healthcare is nothing like as bad as people make out, and there are no long waiting lists anymore (now if you're waiting more than six months for routine surgery… [cont.] Answered by Dazedandconfused - Fri Oct 5 19:48:59 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "europe" Europe is one of the traditional seven political continents, and a peninsular sub-continent of the geographic continent Eurasia.
